English version (below google translate) below..
Hi.
Matthew
Hi.
I am planning a cycle trip in the summer from the Netherlands to the North Cape through Poland, Tallinn and then Scandinavia. I would really like to cycle along the baltic coast in Poland. In the past, I have found that in some regions, it is hard to find small, pleasant roads for cycling, and you end up on main roads with lots of traffic.
Do you have any suggestions for routes along the coast, if possible with a gpx route?
My current plan is to follow the R1 official cycle route from Bologne in France to St Petersburg. This crosses the north of Poland inland. See my planned route here: http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking-2013/
If possible, I would like to replace the inland polish route with one on the coast. Have you got any tips?
Thanks!
Matthew

Hi Matthew!
Look on this track:
http://www.traseo.pl/trasa/swinoujscie-hel-z-dziewieciolatkiem
Should be nice, without many cars.
-
Hey. Thanks! That is exactly what I was looking for! You have quite a few photos of cycling through sand and bogs. Were there many places like this, or just the odd place here or there?
Cool that you cycled that with your son. Must have been a great experience.
Thanks again for your help!!
Matthew
-
That track is not mine. I'm 21 and haven't got a son. :D
What's more, I've not ridden along polish coast yet. I'm planning this kind of route but on road bike. Will be nice if U write me when U will be in Poland. Maybe...can we meet and ride some km together? ;)
-
That would be great! It is always a different experience meeting up with and cycling with the locals. :-)
Have you been to the Netherlands? This is really the Mecca of cycling. :-)
-
Have you been to the Netherlands?
Unfortunately, never had a chance. Maybe in the future? ;)
-
Drop by. I could show you a few nice routes.. ;)
-
Hi Matthew,
I have done Polish coast with my son also. We don't have gps track but you can look at our maps:

Hey. Thanks Marek. I am looking forward to cycling there. It looks like a nice place to visit!!
-
Hey. Thanks everyone for your help. It inspired me to look for detailed routes along the coast, and paste them together to be part of my trip to the North Cape. I have now updated my route. Let me know if I am coming near you! I would love to meet up with some locals for a chat and a cycle!! :-) Also let me know if you are in Holland. I can show you a thing or two here, I think! :-)

Hi, I saw Your new route and I think You will miss pretty much. I can give You some tips from Muritz (Germany) and through Island Usedom. But later, now I'm going to work. ;)
-
In Kluki there is a nice museum, here is a photo gallery from that place: http://muzeumkluki.pl/galeria.html
From Łeba it is close to Slowinski National Park
During summer holidays in Łeba, Jastrzębia Góra, Władysławowo and all Hel Peninsula there are a lot of people. It is popular destination for summer.
Let me know, when you will be in Gdansk. Maybe I'll have time to show you around or cycle one or two days with you.
Instead of cycling through Russia, you can go through eastern Poland directly to Lithuania.

Hey. That would be great to get some tips. The route was what the naviki tool gave me given start and end point. All tips are welcome! :-)

Thanks for the tips. I am looking forward to cycling to Hel. It looks like a beautiful place, even if it is busy. I guess I will always be able to find a place for my tents in the camping grounds..
I plan to go through Gdansk. I'll let you know nearer the time, and we can see what we arrange.. :-)
See ya!

I made it very quickly, but if You have question, send me priv.

For me this is the best stage. It includes: National Park Muritz, Mecklenburgishe Schweiz, Demmin - old hansa City, Greisfwald - old hansa City with great old harbor, Peenemunde ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peenemunde ) and a lot of beautiful small town's at seaside like Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf, Bansin.

Hey. That's great!! I'm going to update my route. Looking forward to seeing that part of Germany and Poland. I used to live in Germany, and I know the lakes in Mecklenburg Vorpommern are quite famous.
All the best!

Hi Oskar. I was warned in another forum that my direct route to the north east of Germany was quite hilly. I have since updated the route to follow some defined long distance bike routes that take the hillyness more into account.. :-) In doing this I have missed out on some of your route. Could you take a look at the route and tell me if some small adjustments would make it nicer?
http://lambchopeindhoven.wordpress.com/biking-2013/germany-2013/
Thanks for your help!! :-)
Matthew

Your route look good. I'm not Germany expert, I've been in Muritz National Park and Mecklenburgishe Schweiz. But If I gonna be at my hometown in summer I can offer You help at Island Usedom and than I can show You more.
I'm from small town at the border with Germany - Swinoujscie.

Hi Oskar. Yes, I saw that town. The first town I will visit in Poland. Looking forward to it.
Have a good week!!

Hi all.
It is now less than a month before I leave for my trip to the North Cape through Poland. I should be cycling through Poland in the middle of June. Thanks all for your tips. I might see some of you there!

Hi all.
Two weeks to go now before I leave Eindhoven on my bike, heading to the North Cape through Poland. I have been training a lot in the last months - in Holland, Belgium, France and the UK. Here is a little video of my trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ttseFfEDtg (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ttseFfEDtg)
Looking forward to seeing Poland, and catching up with some of you!! :-)

Hello
Could You tell us something about your "expedition" bicycle? Some pictures maybe?

Hello
Could You tell us something about your "expedition" bicycle? Some pictures maybe?
Hi Giovanni,
Well, last year I did a shorter cycle trip (1300km in northern Norway), and had lots of problems with my bike (broken spokes mainly on the back wheel and then on its replacement). After deciding to go on this longer trip this year, I decided to buy a better bike, and one that is exactly to my specifications.
I bought a Koga Signature. Koga is a quality Dutch make, and I specified (together with the people from the bike shop) all the different components of the bike. There is a picture of it on my blog here (scroll down): http://arctic-cycler.com/biking-2013/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/biking-2013/)
The key feature of the bike is the Rohloff Speedhub 500/14 together with a carbon belt drive. It has an aluminum frame with 28 inch wheels, and hydraulic brakes.
I have cycled over 2000km on the bike, and have had no problems yet. Up to now I am very happy with the gears and carbon belt drive. Very low maintenance - no oiling the chain, and a quick dust down with a cloth suffices. I am kind of worried of what would happen if it does break. As it is quite uncommon, getting it fixed at a local bike shop may be difficult. Still, I have been assured that it is extremely reliable, and doesn't break. Well, I'll see..
There is also another picture of the bike at the bottom of this post:
http://arctic-cycler.com/2013/05/05/day-3-of-eindhoven-paris-by-bike-guise-paris-205-km/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/2013/05/05/day-3-of-eindhoven-paris-by-bike-guise-paris-205-km/)
Is the Rohloff system popular in Poland?
Matthew
-
Rohloff is a kind of a legend, mostly because of a legendary price ;D If you knew Polish you'd prob found it quite entertaining: http://www.podrozerowerowe.info/index.php?topic=9228.msg175897#msg175897

Yes. Rohloff certainly isn't cheap..
Maybe I should learn Polish. I like languages and speak a few, but Polish is not one of them, unfortunately. I will try to learn a few words when I am there.. :-)
-
You might need some basics especially in the small villages. Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much about Polish, you can always create your own sign language, I guess you know yourself how it works :)
-

I have tried to learn a bit of Russian in the past. Maybe some of the words might be like Polish words. Also, I used to play squash with a Polish colleague, so I learnt a few swear words. Not the kind of words that will be useful for my trip this summer, though.. :-)
-
With only a few days to go before I leave from Holland towards the North Cape in Norway, I have put together all the stuff that I want to take. It is all rather daunting.
Here is a list of what I will be taking: http://arctic-cycler.com/2013/06/04/my-equipment-list-for-eindhoven-nordkapp-2013/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/2013/06/04/my-equipment-list-for-eindhoven-nordkapp-2013/)
Have I forgotten anything?
-
Maybe a few zip ties?
-
How about a mosquito net? It can prove extremely useful in southern Finland and Lappland...
-
Telly :-D:-D:-D
-
Maybe a few zip ties?
Hi Borafu. Good tip! I have now bought some, and added them to the list! Thanks!
-
How about a mosquito net? It can prove extremely useful in southern Finland and Lappland...
Yes. That would be useful if the reports on the mosquitos are to be believed.. :-) (I believe the reports!)
Thanks!
-
Telly :-D:-D:-D
But then I would need to bring my satellite dish.. :-)
-
Have I forgotten anything?
As a Dutchman I would never leave home without at least drop, negerzoenen and some wiet for the lonely evenings. And of course without 'Met het oog op morgen' on your iPhone. ;) :D ;D
Als een Nederlander zou ik nooit vertrekken zonder tenminste drop, negerzoenen en een beetje wiet voor de avonden in zijn eentje mee te nemen. Ook niet zonder 'Met het oog op morgen' op je iPhone. ;) :D ;D
Watch your back!
Goed opletten!
Zet 'm op!
-
I think Matthew comes from Australia. Correct me if I m wrong.

Actually, hindiana is right. I am from Australia, and live in the Netherlands now. Still, I like drop and negerzoenen. I have not tried wiet, and am not sure if it would help me get to the North Cape faster.. :-) Maybe I can try some Polish specialities.. :-) Regarding podcasts - I listen to some from Australia. Keep up to date.
Are there many dutchies in Poland? :-)
Matthew

I think Matthew comes from Australia. Correct me if I m wrong.
100% correct! :-)

Ups, sorry, didn't know (Eindhoven=Philips=NL).

Could you name some of them? (thanks)
I haven't heard 'met het oog op morgen'. :-(
Here you are:D

I was born in Australia and moved to Europe in 1993 where I lived for 5 years before moving to Germany. I moved back to the Netherlands 2,5 years ago.. So, I am from Australia. I am starting the bike trip from the Netherlands, so in that sense, I am from the Netherlands.
Some of the podcasts from Australia that I listen to are:
http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/latenightlive/ (http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/latenightlive/)

Cool. I will listen to 'Met het ook op morgen'..

Use... what? :]
... I would have never said, that Uznam is called Usedom
in German, thanks Matthew :>
How long will it take for you to get to Gdańsk? Are you
going to visit Hel and then take a water tram to Gdańsk?
Szy.
-
Hi there. I think I should need 3-4 days. I am planning to go to Hel. i heard the boat is not running during the week yet. I might have to catch the train from Hel to Gydania instead.
See ya!
Matthew
-
You're right, 22th of June is the first day of daily cruises.
Keep us posted, so maybe we will manage to show you
Gdańsk. On bikes, of course.
Szy.

Cool! Will do!
Thanks!
Matthew

My first day cycling in Poland. :-) forest paths and lots of sun

-
The signs are always located at places where the road quality is not too bad (so one can’t take a photo of a swamp path with the R10 sign visible)
;D
-
Can someone, skillfull in drawning maps, show our friend a way out of Gdańsk - Elbląska, Benzynowa, Wyspa Sobieszewska. I think that without this he can have problems and he may end on S7.
ps. ale mnie Koleżanka wypunktowała :/
-
Will do :]
Szy.
-
Szy, take photos and share them tonight :-)
-
Thanks Jola and Szy! Very friendly of you! I'm having a lovely day cycling today. Stopping for a late lunch at Ustka.
-
Matthew will need to change his plans for Hel - there is
a bus going instead of a train, because of railway renovation.
@M., check your PM.
Szy.
-
Thanks for the info. Shame about Hel. Might go there anyway. Will have to think about it. Very helpful info!
-
Day 9 of my trip was awesome. 203 km of amazing variety in just one day. Can't stop smiling. Read my blog.

Are you going to visit Sigulda? It is very nice city nearby Gauja river valley (about 40 km from Riga).
In Riga you can eat some Latvian specialties in Lido (http://www.lido.lv/).
Have a safe trip!

Hi there. Sigulda is not on my route as I will be following the coast after Riga. Can't see everything. .
Thanks for the restaurant tip. Looks cool!

Remember to try the Estonian "pasteet" - the best in Europe :) Even the cheapest are very good.
-
What is pasteet??
-
It is some kind of spreadable paste consistency meal - mixture of cooked meat with vegetables, spices and "other things".
-
Aaa, "pasteet" czyt. pasztet? :) Sam byłem ciekaw co to jest :D
PS: wg mnie chyba lepiej to by było: pashteet
-
I wrote the meal name in Estonian :)
Po polsku pasztet.

Enjoy Tallinn. Next You will see Helsinki (normal XIX centry city, can not be compered with Tallinn), and after Helsinki only forest and rock :)
And make sure to take as many pictures of Tallinn as You can when You will be on a ferry to Finland. The view is specacular (it was for me anyway, but when I have seen it, I was returning from Nordcape- 36 days without any historical cities/churches/ etc. only nature).

Hi Giovanni. I've just finished a very lazy two days. Today the cycling starts again. I wrote some short blog entries for those days but there was no cycling and a lot of sleeping. I didn't bother posting the links. Looking forward to cycling out of Helsinki. The sun is shining and is lovely weather!

Finnish nature looks stunning! And it seems like you really enjoy the good weather, lucky you.
I've challenged myself with the pronounciation: Uusikaupunki. Sounds familiar but a bit rude in Polish :)

Never thought I'd say so but I really like your nature descritpions (the worst part of our compulsory school books...)
This one is great:
It might be the weather. It is definitely the lack of concrete goal. But more than anything, it is the wild barren nature that is friendly in bright sunshine, and which looks menacing and strong when the clouds pull across, a chill comes into the sun, and a cold wind starts blowing.
"Only hate the road when you're missing home..."

Well done, Matthew. No doubt you had an amazing time.

Great route! When I cycled in the northern coast, I thought it must be nice to see what's to the end of each road which goes north. Unfortunately, time didn't allow to check... But seems it's worth of effort.

After cycling 6315km, I have had my first week of ‘normal life’. I miss the road, and its good to be back. Both at the same time.
Thinking about my trip, I am collecting and collating material from the trip. You will see some of the results of this in the coming weeks.
Today I have my final route for my cycle trip from 2013.

Now that my cycle trip from Holland to the North Cape has finished, I am putting together some nice material to remind me of the trip. Here is the first of 3 videos I am preparing of the trip - this one from Holland to Tallinn in Estonia. This is where I cycled through Poland, and met with Rafalb and Simon from the forum! It was nice meeting them! :-)

Hi all. The second video of my cycle trip from Eindhoven in Holland to the North Cape is now ready. This is the segment where I pass through Scandinavia, ending at the North Cape in Norway. I'm interested in hearing what you think! :-)

Ok. I'm looking forward to it :)

How about a mosquito net? It can prove extremely useful in southern Finland and Lappland...
Yes. That would be useful if the reports on the mosquitos are to be believed.. :-)
Good to see you didn't become a snack for those monsters ;)

Yes. That was a gem of advice. I'm glad I had my net with me. I would have been eaten alive without it! ;-)

Hi all. The third and final video from my summer cycle trip is ready. In this segment of the trip, I explore the far north peninsulas of Norway's coast. It it a spectacular coastline, and I have fabulous weather. I hope you like the video!

Hey, my cycling friends in the Polish cycling forum.
Thanks for all your advice last year with my cycle trip to the North Cape (via Poland) http://arctic-cycler.com/biking/eindhoven-nordkapp-kirkenes-2013/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/biking/eindhoven-nordkapp-kirkenes-2013/). It was also great to meet some of you.
I am really excited (and also quite scared) on what I am about to do. I will be giving up my job of 16 years, and cycling from Holland, where I now live, to my birthplace in Australia http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/01/07/life-is-not-a-dressed-rehearsal-cycling-from-holland-to-australia/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/01/07/life-is-not-a-dressed-rehearsal-cycling-from-holland-to-australia/).
This time I won't be cycling through Poland, but I will look back on my time in Poland. That bike trip gave me the inspiration to embark on this more adventurous trip.. :-)
-
Heh, I've hosted a Warmshowers guy (is there any chance you know him? :D Stephen S...) from Australia, who's lived in Holland for a couple of years, and was cycling to... no, not Australia ;) Just some Balkans countries. I guess he finished in Bosnia or sth...
Good luck on your trip! It's nice to hear, that you enjoyed visiting our country ;)

Hey Waxmund. No. I don't know Stephen.. I will be going through the Balkans on this trip. I hope to visit a friend from Bosnia on the way..
Thanks for your best wishes!! :-)

Hello everyone,
I shared this already but now it is more relevant:
This is the clip I made after cycling the coast with a friend 2 years ago.
You will be able to see what kind of routes and surfaces to expect.
If I was to do it again, I would do it on bigger tyres. 1,6" was at times not enough!
Cheers
Daniel

Hi all,
After a really great trip through Poland last year on the way from Holland to the North Cape (http://arctic-cycler.com/biking/eindhoven-nordkapp-kirkenes-2013/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/biking/eindhoven-nordkapp-kirkenes-2013/)), I am cycling this year from Holland to Australia (http://arctic-cycler.com/world-cycle-2014/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/world-cycle-2014/)).
I'll be meeting people. I will observe, and I will write. What are the sustainability issues people face across my path, and how do they deal with them? Who are the people? What are their stories? I will also support Green Pedals (http://www.facebook.com/greenpedalsforschools (http://www.facebook.com/greenpedalsforschools)) to promote this dialogue, and use to realise sustainable infrastructure in selected schools on my route.
Take a look at my blog entry on Green Pedals: http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/08/18/green-pedals/ (http://arctic-cycler.com/2014/08/18/green-pedals/)

Looking forward to your stories, enjoy your journey!

Hey there. Thanks! I am really looking forward to the trip. Only 2 weeks to go now!! :-)

Holland to Australia, sounds great! But why not go a little farther, say... New Zealand? :) Not only is it a paradise on Earth, but also it's the farthest you can get from Holland - isn't it a perfect destination for a bike tour? :)
Anyway, good luck and enjoy your trip!

Hi Janus,
Thanks for your best wishes! Indeed, New Zealand is a beautiful country. Maybe I will cycle there too. The goal if this trip is to return to where I was born, which is Adelaide, Australia. Also a beautiful place.. :-)
All the best!!
Matthew
-
I see, then Adelaide is better indeed!
But you can still make a short NZ detour on the way there :)
-
NZ would come after Adelaide. :-)
-
And visiting schools... not on your way but one never knows - I work at school in Ireland just give me a shout if you're by any chance passing us by. The rainy and foggy countries might be as interesting as the sunny ones (doesn't sound too convincing I'm afraid :)). You got my 'like' for Greenpedals, I admire your idea.
-
Hey. Thanks Hindiana. Unfortunately Ireland is not in my way. The weather there sounds a bit like Dutch weather. :-)
All the best from Holland!
